Leaf burn or scorch on Tomato and Cucumber plants

A common but not always a major problem with tomato and cucumber plants is leaf burn or scorch normally on the tips of the leaves. This problem can be cause by too much sun on a dry plant or too strong a concentration of fertilisers. There is a school of thought that wetting leaves in strong sunlight will cause leaf burn. However, after having grown tomatoes commercially in the past for I have never had this happen, In fact we used to put on overhead sprinklers on hot days to cool the plants down and get moisture around the flowers to help with the setting. I even grew tomatoes in plastic tunnels in Portugal with only side ventilation, so we had to put the sprinklers on quite a few times a day or used a hose pipe the workers appreciated being cooled down at the same time. First Aid for wilting Cucumber plants

I have had another wilting cucumber plant this year and I was about to remove it, as it really did look on it's last legs. I thought that I would just try to revive it as I managed to do last year. Although this year the plant looked far worse in the heat wave that we have just had. This picture shows last years plant before treatment, which the first signs that it needs treatment as some of the leaves are just starting to wilt. This year the plant looked so bad, that I did not even bother taking a photo at it's worst state. So it just shows that you should never give up on your wilting cucumber. As you can see I lost a few of the bottom leaves, which I will now remove. Let your tomato plants do the talking

All plants are great at sign language, it's just a matter of you learning it as well. You can either take action,or just let them do their own thing, depending on the signs that they give out. Let's start with an easy example, leaf curl. This can be a sign of over watering. Tomato plants prefer a little and often when it comes to watering. However, we cannot always do this. If I am going out for the day and know it's going to be really hot, I sometimes give the soil a good soaking, it also adds humidity to the poly tunnel, which is good for tomatoes and helps fruit setting. I do not worry too much about this sign. Another sign of over watering is a discolouration of the leaves, as it shows a lack of nutrients. Pale yellow patches are the first sign. I use a seep hose for most of my watering.
