Rest in Peace Bramble

Readers of this blog might have noticed our loving dog Bramble featuring in many photo's on my posts. She was constantly by my side in the garden and poly-tunnel, she was so loyal, loving and good natured. Sadly she had not been her normal self this past few months, mainly because of her age. Up until  then she was so active, running around like a young puppy. She started to lose weight, lost her appetite and kept falling over and also had a few infections. She was 13 and did also have a sight heart problem.

It was with very heavy hearts that we decided to have her put down yesterday, our vet felt that her quality of life was suffering and that she was probably in pain, as she didn't leave her bed that much and was not eating a lot. It was a very hard decision to make just before Christmas, but we all felt it was the best decision for Bramble's sake.

We both miss her so much, I keep walking around the garden expecting her to follow me, she was always by our sides, a better companion you could never ever find.

She has now been laid to rest in the corner by the strawberry plants, her favourite garden snack. This is the first post I have written with tears in my eyes, rest in peace Bramble, you were a very special dog and loving friend.

  1. Oh that is so sad. I know exactly how you feel as you know we had our cat put to sleep less than 3 weeks ago - he was the same age as Bramble too. I know that in time you will be able to remember all the happy memories but in the meantime big hugs Steve, because I know it is just devastating.

  2. I am so sorry to hear this. It's an awful feeling, knowing you are doing the right thing, but the moment they are gone you just want them back.
Bramble had a wonderful life with you and you must have so many happy memories of her, but this is the hardest time. A friend sent me this poem when I was hurting as much as you are now. It's good to know some people understand that a dog is not just a dog.

    The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

  4. Our thoughts are with you Steve and I can well understand what you are going through, having sadly been there before with three of our Spaniels. They give a lot and ask for little. You will get over it in time but you will never forget. Bramble was a true member of the family and the loss is all the harder to bear because of it. Courage my friend, and what a lovely photographic tribute.

  5. Hi Andy you are so right about Spaniels, Bramble will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
Luckily I had that lovely painting of her done for Deb the other Christmas, so she has pride of place in the lounge.
    Thanks for your kind thoughts.
